Standing proudly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the medieval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress.
Today, the castle still plays a prominent role in Cumbria as one of its best-loved landmarks. With an exhibition, a programme of guided tours, beautiful medieval carvings, a dungeon, a picnic area, a unique gift shop and being so close to Hadrian’s Wall, the castle makes for a full family day out.
Carlisle Cathedral is one of the jewels of North West England and it celebrates its 900 anniversary in 2022. After standing on the border with Scotland for nine centuries, it has a lively story to tell. It may not be the best-known mediaeval Cathedral in England, it is certainly not the biggest, but it delights its many visitors.
The Hadrian’s Wall Path is an 84 mile (135 km) long National Trail stretching coast to coast across northern England, from Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on the west coast.
The National Trail follows the line of the Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing through some of the most beautiful parts of England – from rolling fields and rugged borderlands to the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle – with dozens of fascinating museums along the way.
Talkin Tarn is a great destination for the whole family. From a 65 acre lake set amid 120 acres of farmland and woodland. The tarn is an ideal place for active recreation or a quiet stroll through the mature woodlands.
For the more adventurous there are water sports including sailing, windsurfing and canoeing.
A permanent orienteering course is laid out around the park. The shop hires mountain bikes and there are suggested routes taking you through beautiful countryside.

Imagine coming to a ruined castle, walking through its gardens and into the woodlands and stumbling across one of the largest adventure playgrounds in the country. When you have done this you have also found the lost castle.
Miltonrigg Woods is an extraordinary and atmospheric place. An outstanding feature in the Cumbrian landscape, this ancient woodland displays vibrant flowers and magnificent veteran trees, as well as wetland areas and a pond.
With so much to see, excellent access facilities and a number of benches at key points to provide a welcome rest, this woodland is ideal for walkers and is a beautiful spot for a picnic. It’s also just a few kilometres south of Hadrian’s Wall and other historical attractions, making it a great destination for an extended stay.
Leighton Hall near Carnforth, is the family home of the famous Gillow furniture making family. Famous for its’ Objects d’art and stunning pieces of Gillow furniture, Leighton is a place where everyone can relax; there are no roped off areas, and it’s not often you’re asked not to touch!
